For background on each app, see our VLC APK guide and MX Player APK guide.

VLC vs MX Player: playback and formats
In the VLC vs MX Player comparison, format support is VLC’s biggest strength. It plays MKV, MP4, AVI, MOV, FLAC and many more without extra codec downloads, and it handles multiple audio tracks and subtitle files well. MX Player built its reputation on smooth hardware-accelerated playback, but today the app is centred on streaming, so local playback is no longer the main focus.
Ads, privacy and data
VLC has no ads and no tracking, according to VideoLAN. Amazon MX Player is funded by ads, which means more data collection for advertising. If privacy matters, VLC is the clear winner in VLC vs MX Player. If you use Amazon MX Player, review its permissions in Settings → Apps and turn off anything it does not need, such as location.
Streaming and content
Here Amazon MX Player has the advantage in VLC vs MX Player. It offers a free catalogue of series and films, available as a streaming service in India and also through Amazon’s shopping app, Prime Video and Fire TV. VLC does not provide content; it only plays what you already have or stream from your own network.
Safety: official sources only
In VLC vs MX Player, both apps are safe when installed from official sources. The risk comes from modified versions: “VLC Pro” does not exist (VLC is already free), and “MX Player Pro mod” or “ad-free” APKs are re-signed by third parties. See why mod APKs are risky.
